Did you ever hear of the Marvel Comics character ZOMBIE? No, not the “Marvel Zombies.” Everybody’s heard of them. A series of mini-series-es featuring every character familiar to Marvel fans, only depicted as a zombie. It was a neat idea but it got stale after awhile. The best use of the Marvel zombies, I believe, was in the recent SECRET WARS storyline, wherein all the disparate realities of the multiverse were conglomerated into a massive planet called Battleworld, ruled over by Dr. Doom, and the Marvel Zombies got their own, walled-off country. (If you’re thinking they didn’t stay confined by those walls–good guess.) No, I’m talking about THE Marvel Zombie, the original. A dead guy named Simon Garth.
Garth was an unlikely and smelly superhero, but I always liked him. I felt he was always underused. Maybe the time is ripe (*ahem*) for Marvel to bring him back. Have Simon, a zombie still somehow in control of his mental faculties (except for the umpteen times some villain seized control of the magical amulet that allowed them to control him) fighting other supernatural entities, or even other zombies. Who better to battle mindless, brain-craving zombies, I ask you? They wouldn’t be drawn to attack him, since he’s a zombie just like them, and he could go around picking them off like shooting fish in the proverbial barrel. Actually, that’d be too easy for him, and it would get boring before too long. But there are all kinds of other monsters he could fight, right? I say, bring back the Zombie!
