I am in the minority amongst the Horror faithful in that I really liked WORLD WAR Z, the movie. Yes, it was different from the book. Like, way different. And the book is always better anyway; yeah, yeah, I get it. Personally I find comparing books and films in the first place to be silly. They are two completely different mediums. Two things so dissimilar could never be equal, thus neither can ever be superior, and neither should be measured as an indicator of the worth of the other. I judged WWZ strictly as a standalone movie. Likewise, the biggest complaint I’ve heard from fans is that the film skewed more towards action than Horror and gore. They are right, but this is the approach the filmmakers sought. It cannot then be considered a failure. They WANTED a movie that would appeal more to the mainstream. If you wanted a true Romero-esque Horror show, you might be disappointed, but that doesn’t mean the creators of WWZ got the formula wrong. They created lasagna when you wanted pizza. Doesn’t mean the lasagna isn’t tasty.
WORLD WAR Z 2 has been pulled from the schedule. It was originally meant to open this coming summer. It’s unusual for a studio to yank a movie outright. Usually they just push back the opening date. That WWZ is no longer set for a release at all is troubling. Still, I’d rather them not release it if it has problems until those problems are fixed than to release an inferior film. When will we see WWZ2? Who knows. Alternately, that the new FRIDAY THE 13TH film has been pulled from the schedule is not surprising, considering that they are only now getting started with filming it. No way they could have it out in such a short time. The same is undoubtedly true where WWZ2 is concerned. They need more time. But WHY do they need more time? That is the 25 million dollar question. Are they having to start over from scratch? Sometimes it’s better to just throw the whole damn concoction out the window and begin with a new recipe. If this is the case, might I recommend, filmmakers, that you add extra amounts of blood and guts? I guarantee Horror fans would be more receptive to your picture if you do.
